2021 Billy Button ‘The Dapper’ Durif

2021 Billy Button ‘The Dapper’ Durif

In Australia Durif is synonymous with North East Victoria, specifically Rutherglen, where it is known to produce big bold dense wines. This Durif grown on the cool lower slopes of Mt Buffalo produces a much different expression of the variety - perfumed and vibrant yet with the hallmark dense colour and firm tannin structure. Neil Mulchay chose to plant Durif on his Porepunkah vineyard despite the challenges of planting in such a cool, high rainfall region because he loved the variety so much. Jo made wine for him under his Mt Buff label from the 2014 vintage. Unfortunately, Neil passed away in 2016 so Jo now purchases the fruit for Billy Button and in many ways this wine is a tribute to him.

Say 'dew-rif'

Production Notes

The fruit was split into a few parcels with a combination of destemming and crushing direct to open fermenters.  After a few days of maceration fermentation was initiated by wild yeasts. Ferments were plunged or pumped very gently twice a day then pressed out after one to two weeks of post ferment maceration. The wine was filled to a combination of large format French oak, approximately 10% new and flexcube and matured for 18 months prior to bottling.

Tasting notes

A fragrant cool example of this variety, with dense black fruit forefront.  Aromas of blood plums and dark chocolate intwined with attractive charred oak, underlying red fruit and a hint of slate.  The palate is rich, with layers of red and black fruit.  Dynamic acidity and abundant firm tannins provide a lingering savoury finish.

Reviews

"Brings a smart winemaking brain and an even-handed approach to durif, which often sees everything turned up to 11. Turn down the alcohol and the tannin and you’ll see something like this. It’s dark and earthy with hidden pockets of violet and rosemary aromatics, delicious black fruits, dark chocolate and oak spices. Robust tannins bring a presence and potential ageing ability, but do not undo the lovely balance achieved." Awarded 92 points, Halliday Wine Companion, Jeni Port - Published 02 August 2023
