2022 Billy Button ‘The Unexpected’ Aglianico

Silver at AAVWS and 91 Points Halliday Wine Companion
2022 Billy Button ‘The Unexpected’ Aglianico

In 2018 the winery was closed, and the equipment had been cleaned when Mark Walpole of Aquila Audax Vineyard called and asked "would you like some Aglianico, it'll be ready by midday."  What could I say? Hence the name “The Unexpected”.

Aglianico is of ancient lineage, believed to be brought to Italy by the original greek colonists.  Known for dense colour, firm tannins and acidity to match, this wine is well balanced with typical varietal characters.

Production Notes

Crushed and destemmed directly to small open top fermenters and inoculated with selected yeast.  Ferments were hand plunged twice daily until primary ferment was complete and were then held on skins for a further month before pressing.  Matured in predominantly old French oak – 10% new, until blending and crossflow filtration.  Bottled September 2023.

Tasting Notes

Bright crimson in colour and perfumed, with lifted florals, oregano and delicate potpourri characters.  The palate is interlaced with dried rose petals and delivers prominent tannins that are firm and incredibly fine.  A structured wine with substantial length.

Optimal Tasting Window – 2024 to 2034

Reviews

Awarded SILVER at the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show

"Might also be called 'The Sleeper', such is aglianico's tremendous potential in the Alpine Valleys. Brings style and plenty of energy to the glass. Vibrant purple hues. Juicy red berries, black cherry, pomegranate, spice and aniseed play and bounce against a dry, firm tannin background, finishing with a flourish of Italian-style astringency." Awarded 91 points, Halliday Wine Companion, Jeni Port - Published 07 August 2024
