2023 Billy Button ‘The Unexpected’ Aglianico
In 2018 the winery was closed, and the equipment had been cleaned when Mark Walpole of Aquila Audaz Vineyard called me and asked "would you like some Aglianico, it'll be ready by midday." What could I say? Hence the name “The Unexpected”.
Aglianico is of ancient lineage, believed to be brought to Italy by the original greek colonists. Known for dense colour, firm tannins and acidity to match, this wine is in balance with varietal ripe plum and chocolate, with hints of oregano and tar.

Production Notes
Crushed and destemmed directly to small open top fermenters and inoculated with selected yeast. Ferments were hand plunged twice daily until primary ferment was complete and were then held on skins for a further 2 weeks before pressing. Matured in predominantly old French oak – 20% new, until blending and crossflow filtration. Bottled September 2024.
Tasting Notes
Bold flavors of black cherry, spiced plum, cocoa, and aniseed, elegantly complemented by earthy and savory nuances. A firm, tannic finish, provides excellent structure.

Reviews
"One of the classic grapes of southern Italy is making a name for itself in the Alpine Valleys. Delivers intense flavours of black cherry, spiced plum, cocoa and aniseed accentuated nicely by earthy, lightly savoury undertones. A warm middle palate finishes with grippy tannins, bringing plenty of structure. A grape to watch." Rated 92 points, Halliday Wine Companion, Jeni Port
